Resources
If you are interested in collecting your own herbarium specimens you may find the resources below useful.
- If you wish to collect for or donate to the herbarium, it is important to follow guide to collecting specimens for La Trobe University Herbarium
- Regular collectors can contact the curator for a collecting book or you download this template and print your own.
- Students collecting for assessment tasks should use this labels template. Other collectors must contact the curator for a copy of the excel spreadsheet for data entry.
All plant specimen collection must be done legally, which can mean obtaining permission from a private landowner, or a state government-issued permit – or both. The process can be complicated and frequently changes. To know whether you will need a permit for collecting, visit the DEECA research permits website. For the latest list of protected flora check the DEECA threatened flora page.
The herbarium holds collecting permits under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act (1988) and an Access Agreement for Parks Victoria managed reserves. Staff and students wishing to use either of these permits, or seeking general advice should contact the curator on herbarium@latrobe.edu.au.
